Here we are comparing two high-performing summer tyres, the Continental SportContact 7 and the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. Both these tyres are exceptional, but a closer look reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each.

The Continental SportContact 7 is an ultra-high performance tyre manufactured in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Portugal. Our rating for this tyre is 100%, reflecting its outstanding performance in tests. Dry braking and comfort are consistently mentioned as its strongest features. With the best in wet braking and handling by a considerable margin along with the shortest dry braking, this tyre indeed stands out. However, it's worth mentioning that it showed poor aquaplaning resistance and increased rolling resistance. Also, in the 18" size on the Golf, it wasn't quite as well balanced around the limit as the 19" fitment.

On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S is a summer tyre made in the US rated at 93% by our team. This tyre is praised for its comfort, excellent grip in the dry and wet, good aquaplaning resistance, and low levels of noise. Significantly, it sports a low rolling resistance, making it an energy-efficient choice. However, it lacks in steering feel and speed during handling tests. And at the limit, it still isn't quite the sportiest of the bunch.

In a mutual test conducted by Sport Auto, the Continental SportContact 7 held the 1st position whilst the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S was at the 3rd position. This test considered aspects such as dry handling, wet handling, dry braking, and wet braking among other factors.

In conclusion, both the Continental SportContact 7 and the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S are great summer tyre choices, offering different strengths. The Continental offers superb grip and braking in both dry and wet conditions, albeit at the cost of poor aquaplaning resistance. Conversely, the Michelin offers excellent comfort and efficiency with room for improvement in handling speed. Ultimately, the right tyre for you would depend on your priorities and driving conditions.

While both these tyres have been succeeded by newer models, you can still find more about them on the respective product pages of Continental and Michelin.
