When considering performance, comfort, and efficiency, two deserving contenders come to mind: the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and the Continental SportContact 7. Manufactured by two industry giants, Michelin and Continental, respectably, these tyres bring high-quality performances to the table.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, made in the US, is a summer tyre revered for its comfort and boasts an impressive 93% rating on our site. Yet, it's not just about comfort; this Michelin tyre also impresses with its well-rounded performance in dry and wet conditions, excellent aquaplaning resistance, and low levels of noise. Some users noted a minor downside - a lack of steering feel and speed during handling tests. However, this tyre is a reliable choice, especially if you're not going on track a lot. It was replaced by a newer model.
Now onto the Continental SportContact 7, a UUHP summer tyre produced in CZ, SK, and PT. This tyre, which earned a top rating of 100% from us, stands out for its dry braking and comfort. It offers high-performance handling and short braking distances, both in wet and dry conditions. Its dry performance with the shortest dry braking stands out, along with its excellent aquaplaning resistance. The lack of balance around the limit (noted on an 18" size on the Golf) and increased rolling resistance were some minor downsides. Like the Michelin, this Continental tyre was also replaced by an upgraded model.
In mutual tests, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S consistently excelled in comfort, aquaplaning resistance, and dry braking. However, the Continental SportContact 7 stood out, taking the lead in dry handling, wet handling, wet braking, and dry lane changing. Despite its limitations, the Continental still managed to pull through as #1 in a sportauto tyre comparison test that included 11 tyres in total, while the Michelin managed the 3rd position.
To sum up, both the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and the Continental SportContact 7 offer excellent performances and high comfort levels. If you value a well-rounded tyre with excellent comfort, safe handling balance, and are not primarily using it on the track, the Michelin could be your top choice. Whereas, the Continental should be your go-to for excellent dry braking, and if you value a more dynamic driving experience with fantastic handling. Remember, both tyres have been replaced by newer models, so consider checking them out for the latest advancements. Whichever you choose, rest assured, you are opting for a high-quality, performance-driven tyre.
