When it comes to summer tyres, two models that stand out are the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport and the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S. These tyres, made by renowned manufacturers Goodyear and Michelin respectively, provide impressive performance but have different strengths and weaknesses.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport achieves a rating of 71% in our tests. Manufactured in Germany, this tyre stands out for its aquaplaning resistance and is lauded for its excellent dry handling. It also scores points for comfort, wet handling and wet circle cornering. The F1 Supersport's brilliant dry grip and short braking distances create impressive safety reserves. However, it struggles a bit in the wet, with long wet braking distances and lower aquaplaning resistance. Also, it has been noted it could be the noisiest tyre on the test and might provide lower levels of comfort.
The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S, on the other hand, clinches a high rating of 94% in our evaluations. Made in the USA, this summer tyre thrills with its dry handling, rolling resistance, and excels in both wet and dry braking. It's the winner in wet braking, dry handling, dry braking, and exterior noise. The Pilot Sport 4 S also offers exceptional grip in both the dry and wet and has good aquaplaning resistance, coupled with low noise levels and low rolling resistance. On the downside, it has been noted for a lack of steering feel and speed during handling tests.
In the AutoBild test, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport got the third position out of seven tyres, while the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S secured the second. However, in a different test also by AutoBild, the Michelin tyre claimed the first position out of nine tyres while the Goodyear tyre came in third.
In summary, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S edges out the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport in our comparison, thanks to its superior grip, excellent wet and dry braking, and less noise. However, this model was replaced by the Michelin Pilot Sport S 5, which you may want to consider as well. If comfort and wet handling are your primary concerns, the Goodyear tyre could still be a good choice.
