The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 are two of the most tested ultra-high and high-performance summer tyres on the market, both succeeding respected predecessors — the Pilot Sport 4 and Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 respectively. Across five major independent test programmes, a clear pattern emerges: these are both excellent tyres, but they reward different priorities.
In terms of head-to-head test results, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 holds the clear overall edge. It finished 2nd in both the Sportauto (7-tyre field) and Autobild (50-tyre field) tests, 3rd in Autozeitung, and took outright 1st place in the ACE test — where it dominated across wet braking, wet handling, dry braking, dry handling, and exterior noise. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5, by contrast, placed 5th in both Sportauto and Autozeitung, 6th in the large Autobild test, and 3rd in both ADAC and ACE. The one area where Michelin reverses the table is ADAC, where it finishes 3rd against the Goodyear's 4th — suggesting a slight Michelin edge in that particular test methodology.
Dry Road Performance
On dry roads,
the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is genuinely outstanding for steering precision. Sportauto awarded it the top position in dry steering response, and testers consistently praised its precise, reliable handling in dry corners and its best-in-class vehicle balance on dry tarmac. Autobild noted dynamic handling across both wet and dry conditions. If pure dry-road steering feel and balanced chassis behaviour are your priority, the Pilot Sport 5 has a real edge here. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is no slouch on dry roads — ACE rated it best for dry braking and dry handling, and Autobild highlighted strong lane-change and handling scores — but it doesn't have quite the same level of dry-road steering feedback that Michelin's tyre delivers.
Wet Road and Aquaplaning
In wet conditions,
the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is the stronger package overall. It claimed best wet braking and wet handling in the ACE test, was noted for balanced wet-and-dry performance in multiple Autobild cycles, and Sportauto highlighted its high cornering grip and neutral balance in the wet. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 draws some criticism here: Sportauto flagged weak cornering grip in wet conditions, sensitivity to throttle-lift with sudden rear movement, and — notably — finished last in longitudinal aquaplaning at 81.0 km/h. The Pilot Sport 5 does show good aquaplaning cross-scores and competitive wet braking in other tests, so it is not deficient across the board, but
drivers in frequently wet climates should note the aquaplaning and wet handling concerns.
Comfort, Noise and Running Costs
The
Goodyear tyre shines particularly strongly in everyday usability. Sportauto awarded it the best rolling comfort score in its test (10/10) and the lowest exterior noise reading (68.1 dB). Autobild consistently highlighted its comfort and noise performance across multiple test years. Perhaps most impressively, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has earned a reputation as an
exceptional long-wear tyre — Autobild's 2026 test named it the eco-champion with the highest predicted mileage, and multiple test programmes confirm outstanding tread life combined with the lowest rolling resistance among premium tyres tested (8.4 kg/t in Sportauto 2026).
Michelin's Pilot Sport 5 also earns good mileage marks and competitive running costs — Autobild praised its durability — but the Goodyear's combination of very high mileage, lower rolling resistance, and better price-value ratio (Autobild 2023 rated it best price-to-performance) gives it a meaningful real-world advantage.
Verdict
For drivers who want the sharpest dry-road steering response and the most involving, balanced dry handling, the
Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is the pick. For everything else — wet performance, comfort, noise, mileage, running economy, and overall test consistency —
the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is the more complete tyre, and the majority of test programmes back that up. Both represent the premium end of summer performance, but the Goodyear's versatility and long-term value make it the stronger everyday recommendation.
