Today, let's look at two high-performance summer tyres; Uniroyal RainSport 5 and Michelin Pilot Sport 5. Both are designed for improved handling and traction in wet and dry conditions, yet they vary quite substantially in their performance across various tests.
Starting with the Uniroyal RainSport 5, a tyre with no previous models, it stands within our rating at 62%. Being an Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyre, the RainSport 5 clearly designates its strengths in dealing with substantial amounts of water, as seen in its best features which include aquaplaning - both cross and longitudinal. Despite these strengths Uniroyal's tyre fell to the 17th position in the Autobild test out of 50 tyres.
On the other hand, our tests placed the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 with a remarkable rating of 96%. As the successor to the well-renowned Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and Michelin Pilot Sport 3, the latest Michelin Ultra Ultra High Performance (UUHP) offering upholds its legacy. In Autobild tests, this Michelin tyre ranked impressively at 6th position, indicating its superior overall performance. The Pilot Sport 5 particularly stands out for its mileage and wet braking.
Reviewing Autobild 2025's summary of the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, the tyre is praised for its dynamic handling behaviour, short braking distances on wet and dry surfaces, excellent service life, and very good scoring in the cost chapter. One of the drawbacks mentioned is the high price, which can be a factor to consider for some buyers.
If we summarise the information from all tests, we can clearly see the differences between these two tyres. While the Uniroyal RainSport 5 demonstrates strengths in situations involving lots of water and aquaplaning, it doesn't tend to perform as well in other areas compared with the Michelin Pilot Sport 5.
On the other hand, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 excels in several testing areas such as control, braking, and mileage, and has been commended for its high cost-effectiveness despite the price. The Pilot Sport 5 seems to be the better tyre overall as per the results of multiple tests.
It's important to note however that the right tyre for you depends on your individual driving style, typical driving conditions, and personal preferences. Both tyres are excellent choices within their segments, offering distinctive strengths to cater to different driver needs.
