Detailed head-to-head comparison based on actual test results
Tyre tests have consistently shown two summer tyres - the Maxxis Premitra HP5 made by Maxxis, and the Toyo Proxes Comfort made by Toyo, a Japanese manufacturer - showing distinctive performance characteristics that could serve different driver demands. The Maxxis outperforms the Toyo with a test rating of 78% compared to the Toyo's 72%, however, both tyres have their unique strengths.
The Maxxis Premitra HP5 is overall a solid performer. Topping the notable features are it's excellent aquaplaning performance, impressive handling on gravel, and offering an excellent level of comfort. The data from Autobild test gave the tyre 9th position amongst a total of 53 tyres, highlighting its good mileage and short dry braking distances. However, a delayed steering response and mediocre levels of grip both on wet and dry surfaces were pointed out as areas of concern.
The Toyo Proxes Comfort, often categorized as a touring tyre, excels in dry handling and braking, and was named by Autobild test for its comfort. With a rank of 17 among a total of 53 tested tyres, the Toyo Proxes Comfort offers dynamic wet and dry handling, short braking distances, and a moderate price level. It's quiet rolling noise is another plus, however, a downside would be it's relatively low mileage.
Comparatively, the Maxxis Premitra HP5 seems to claim a better position in mutual tests. Yet, these two tyres cater to different demands. For drivers who prioritise safety in wet conditions, the Maxxis's strength in "Aquaplaning" - an essential factor for performance in rain - would be the ideal choice. However, for those who are looking for a tyre with solid dry performance and comfort, and who are less concerned about mileage, the Toyo Proxes Comfort could be the preferred option.
Both the Maxxis Premitra HP5 and the Toyo Proxes Comfort are currently available with no newer tyre models replacing them.
