Detailed head-to-head comparison based on actual test results
Welcome to the comparison between two high-performance summer tyres, the Dunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2 and the Kumho Ecsta PS71. Both are products of well-respected manufacturers - Dunlop and Kumho respectively.
Firstly, let’s take a look at the Dunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2, which overall achieved a rating of 72% in our testing process. A notable advantage of this tyre is its superior performance in aquaplaning conditions - both cross and longitudinal. It earned a commendable 11th place out of 53 tyres tested in the AutoBild test, demonstrating its solid performance in wet road conditions. Criticism, however, came from the autobild 2025 test where it reported delayed steering response on dry roads
On to the the Kumho Ecsta PS71 which earned an overall rating of 68%. Rankings from both AutoBild and ADAC tests place this tyre at the higher end of the scale with positions at 18th out of 53 tyres and 3rd out of 17 tyres respectively. The Kumho PS71’s strengths lie in its an impressive balance in handling and performance, short braking distances in both wet and dry conditions, and fair price. However, it did draw attention due to its raised noise level during driving.
In a head-to-head comparison, the Dunlop tyre performs better in aquaplaning situations, but the Kumho tyre wins out due to its well-rounded performance and handling capabilities. From the data gathered from all of our tests, we find that the Dunlop tyre excels in wet road situations, particularly aquaplaning, while the Kumho tyre provides an overall more balanced performance in both wet and dry conditions, despite the heightened noise levels during operation.
In summary, your final selection will depend largely on the specific conditions you frequently encounter. For drivers dealing with a lot more aquatic road conditions, the Dunlop SP Sport MAXX RT2 may be a better match. For those who require an all-around performer, regardless of increased noise, the Kumho Ecsta PS71 is likely the more suitable choice. As always, remember to keep your specific driving needs and situation in mind when choosing tyres.
