Comparison: Michelin Primacy 5 vs. Michelin Primacy 4 vs. Michelin e.Primacy vs. GoodYear Efficientgrip Performance 2 vs. Goodyear Efficientgrip 2 SUV vs. Bridgestone Turanza T005

The Primacy 5 sets the new standard for comfort and wet safety; the Primacy 4 leads on dry stopping and longevity.

Within Michelin's Primacy comfort touring family, the Primacy 5 and Primacy 4 play distinctly different roles — and the fact that both remain on sale simultaneously is no accident. The Michelin Primacy 5 is the current flagship of the range, launched as a direct successor to the Primacy 4+, refined with Michelin's latest compound and tread technologies. The Michelin Primacy 4 is the generation before — but with 136 sizes spanning 14" to 23" rims, it covers cars and fitments the newer model simply cannot yet reach. If your car fits the Primacy 5, the choice is more nuanced than you might expect; if it doesn't, the Primacy 4 remains a serious tyre in its own right.

Verdict

The Primacy 5 is the right choice for most buyers who have a compatible size — it is the more modern, more refined tyre, with genuinely better aquaplaning protection and exceptional comfort and noise levels. Michelin's own wet safety credentials are stronger on the newer model, and the owner satisfaction data backs this up. If you drive primarily in wet climates or on roads prone to surface flooding, that aquaplaning advantage alone justifies the upgrade. The Primacy 4 makes most sense in two scenarios: when the Primacy 5 simply isn't available in your size, or when you prioritise outright dry braking confidence and long tread life above all else. It remains a well-sorted, thoroughly tested tyre with a strong track record — just be aware that in heavy standing water, the newer generation has moved the benchmark considerably.
