How we rank

This ranking evaluates the best winter tyres for dry road handling based on a comprehensive blend of objective tests and expert reviews from independent organizations including ADAC, ACE, Autobild, and TÜV among others. The scoring focuses on six key properties specifically related to dry conditions: dry braking, dry handling (both subjective and measured), dry lane changing, dry safety, and dry steering response. Each property contributes differently to the overall score, with dry braking, dry handling (subjective), and dry handling measured carrying the most weight at 30 points each, reflecting their critical importance for performance on dry roads. Dry lane changing, dry safety, and dry steering response each add 10 points, rounding out the total score. These weighted scores are combined to produce a final ranking score out of 100, allowing a clear comparison of tyre performance in dry winter conditions.

Key insights

The results reveal a competitive field dominated by premium and upper-middle segment tyres, with Continental and Michelin strongly represented among the top performers. The Toyo Snowprox S954 leads the ranking with a score of 92.2, excelling particularly in dry handling measured (100) and steering response (100), demonstrating exceptional precision and control. Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 closely follows with 91.7 points, notable for its strong dry braking (87.1) and lane changing (95) scores, confirming its reputation for traction and efficiency. The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P and Hankook W462 Winter i*cept RS3 also feature prominently, showcasing that upper-middle segment tyres can rival premium models in dry handling. Michelin’s Pilot Alpin 5 SUV and Pilot Alpin 5 offer a balanced blend of dry braking and safety, reinforcing Michelin’s focus on dynamic winter driving. The field is relatively tight at the top, with scores clustered between 85.7 and 92.2, indicating close competition and nuanced differences rather than clear dominance. Notably, Toyo’s top position highlights that budget-conscious options can outperform some premium rivals in dry handling, challenging assumptions about price and performance correlation.

Buying advice

For drivers prioritizing dry handling in winter tyres, focusing on tyres with high scores in dry braking and dry handling is crucial, as these directly impact safety and driving confidence on dry roads. Tyres like the Toyo Snowprox S954 and Continental WinterContact TS 870 offer excellent steering precision and responsive braking, making them ideal for drivers who frequently encounter dry winter conditions and want sharp, predictable handling. However, trade-offs may exist; some tyres with superior dry handling might be less optimized for snow or generate more road noise. It’s important to consider your typical driving environment—if you face mixed conditions, balancing dry performance with snow grip and comfort is key. This ranking is most relevant for drivers who experience predominantly dry winter roads and want tyres that deliver maximum control and safety in those conditions without compromising winter performance entirely.
