Comparing two top-tier summer tyres: the Uniroyal RainSport 5 and the Pirelli Cinturato P7.
In the ultra-high performance (UHP) category, the Uniroyal RainSport 5 has a rating of 62%. Notably, its performance over wet surfaces is commendable. It showed excellent resistance to aquaplaning, both in longitudinal and lateral tests according to Autobild. However, its performance was negatively impacted by the soft, squishy handling and limited lateral grip on dry surfaces. In a different test by ADAC, it excelled in terms of exterior noise and aquaplaning, but finished 13th out of 15 tyres tested.
As a result of these various tests, the Uniroyal RainSport 5 falls slightly behind the competition in some areas despite its strengths. This is probably due to its lack of explicit first equipment affiliations and an undisclosed manufacturing origin. We're keen to see if there is a newer model on the horizon that could potentially improve on these weaknesses.
On the other hand, the Pirelli Cinturato P7 shows significant promise, with an overall rating of 75%. Manufactured in Italy and Romania, this Pirelli summers tyre exhibits exceptional performance in terms of braking, dynamic steering, and handling behaviour. These features gave it a strong 9th place finish in the Autobild test, performed against a total of 55 other tyres.
However, some criticisms were regarding its satisfactory mileage and affordability considering its increased price level. The ADAC confirmed its excellent performance in noise control (both interior and exterior) and dry braking, where it scored a 12th place out of 15.
Despite minor setbacks on mileage and costs, the Pirelli Cinturato P7 consistently delivers superior performance compared to the Uniroyal RainSport 5. But there's no word yet on any successor tyre to this model.
Conclusion: The Pirelli Cinturato P7 impresses with its overall robust performance, leading it to consistently outperform the Uniroyal RainSport 5 in various tests. Nonetheless, the Uniroal tyre holds its own with specific strengths, particularly in wet surface handling. Both tyres have areas for potential improvement, and we're excited to see how the next models from Uniroyal and Pirelli will address these.
